It was a big decision for us, so we set out to do the necessary homework on the trip. We discovered some interesting things in the process. Obviously we ended up deciding to go to St Barts, but we considered a lot of other places. I was thinking about Jamaica a lot, but then I learned that you really have to be careful when you take a trip there. It is pretty much the same as any other trip for the most part. For instance if you go to just about any city in the U.S.A there is going to be parts of the place where you do not go unless you are looking to buy things you can not buy legally. In Jamaica that would include places like Trench Town, where Bob Marley and a whole lot of gangsters come from. You would obviously go to the resorts instead, but you should avoid Jamaica after an election.
It turns out that a lot of the gangs or posses in the country are aligned with political parties. So after the election there is often a settling of scores, especially if the ruling party gets kicked out. They would have done the same thing when they got in power, so the other side would have had years to plot vengeance. It can apparently turn into a small scale war, which is not my idea of a good time on your holiday. Now you want to avoid hurricanes as best you can, but you also want to go to this part of the world when it is winter. That makes sense, you escape the cold from where you are. We have been trying to strike the best balance, but we are going to go and have a really great time while we are done there.
